Why it works
Most dark themes fail on exactly two colors: black (color 0) and bright black (color 8). Both are meant to be "dim," and both are used by shells, editors, and tools for comments, line numbers, and secondary text. On a near-black background they land around 1.2:1 and 2:1, which is invisible.
This theme lifts them to a cool mid-gray that still reads as dim next to the foreground but clears 4.5:1 on its own. Nothing else changed. The lowest ratio in the set is now 5.2:1; the rest run from 5.7:1 to 16.5:1.
